Fluxbox

Fluxbox, just as nice as blackbox but only a little nicer to use.

Oroborus for vertical apps

When developing systems for vertical markets,
I use the application name on the login screen,
which fires up the oroborus wm,
which does nothing.
I put it in the background,
and the app in the forground.
Exiting the app logs the user back out.
If the user is aged or infirm, one can make things very easy for them,
by using gnomeconf and the accessibility options.
Each login can be made passwordless, as nothing but the app can be executed.
Ownership of settings and config files can be set to root, hardening the system against accidental or malicious misuse.
The Ororobos wm has got to be the best choice for this type of computing.

IceWm

IceWm is very lite-weight, and stable.
It allows you to change the menus/hotkeys, and that's very awesome and unique.

The amount of themes isn't that much, but it does.

KDE is for me!

I use KDE on any Linux distro I use, because it is easy, flexible, and beautiful. Also it looks like Mac OS 9 meets XP and works the same. What's sad is most on this page "claim" to use something in fear of being called a "newbie". Silly them! KDE will always be the leader!

KDE won me over, too

I use to swear by WindowMaker. But, with 3.4 now on my desktop, I cannot do without KDE's integration and Konqueror's flexibility.

KDE 3.4

IT looks absolutely gorgeous compared to older versions. Not too too different from 3.3, but different enough.

Fluxbox & wmdrawer

I don't need the bloat of KDE or GNOME 'desktop environments'. I use Fluxbox 0.9.12, one
of the most feature-packed yet lightweight window managers I have ever seen. To start
up an app, I use wmdrawer. I have lots and lots of RAM to play with, and X starts up in just
a few seconds. I use asmem to watch my memory and swap usage, wmCalClock for the
time and date, fbpager for my pager. I have this setup on a p2 laptop, a p3 laptop and a
CeleronM laptop. Even the Pentium II is zippy with this lightweight setup.

As you can tell, I am not a newbie. However, I am trying to 'convert' some Windoze
users, so it's good to see the common problems (and solutions) of new users.
I am tired of hearing that "it's too hard" or "but that's what came on my computer
[Windoze]. I'm hoping to learn a few things about 'converting' people via your articles
and these types of user comments.

I used Unix about 10 years ago and would like to get back to it. I was on Steve Jobs Black Box. I've got RedHat to load on a new computer. After that I just draw a blank. What do I use for word docs and spreadsheets? What about PowerPoint type application. Guys, it's been a very long time! All these desktop environments and download helpers! I need to get caught up for sure. I really feel like a total newbie!

Fluxbox

I've tried KDE, GNOME and XFCE4.2 before staying with fluxbox. The simplicity of the wm is perfect, at least for me. I especially like features like the keys file. Also the need for manual configuration is perfectly in line with my current linux-distro.
The fact that it eats almost no resources compared with the aforementioned three is another reason to love this feature-rich adorable little wm.

FluxBox and Idesk Icons

I use Fluxbox on all my Linux desktop/laptop systems, and just recently tried out Idesk. Idesk allows you to add Icons to your flux desktop easily. Need some good Icons?...download the Gentoo Icon pack from the main Gentoo site . Fluxbox is lite and fast on my slower systems. It has many themes avaliable for it and is fairly easy to customize. You can go with a basic theme, or a full blown theme with a nice background image, Icons in the menus and on the desktop.

I use Slackware, but man those Gentoo Icons are sweet.

Poll>Desktop Environment

One of my Laptops runs with Libranet (a great Debian derivate) and this unique "Libranet window manager". Originally it is IceWM with Gnome apps (desklets a.o.). Performance is like IceWM on steroids :)
There are no speed problems, even with 650 MHz CPU and 256 MB RAM.
My other IBM Thinkpad (PIII/800MHz/256MB RAM) goes with Slackware 10.1 and, of course, Fluxbox.

fluxboxies

As you get more sophisticated you move away from the picture and point desktops like kde and take up something like fluxbox. Then if you want real simplicity and flexibility you move on to ion. It's the same sort of leap. Fluxboxies feel the same moving to ion as they originally did moving to fluxbox. Bit disorientating at first and takes a little while to see why it's a better choice.

:-)
